1. Parent Training Overview

Parent training empowers caregivers to implement ABA strategies consistently, helping skills learned in therapy generalize to home, school, and community settings.

Core Goals:

Increase consistency of interventions across settings.

Improve child outcomes and independence.

Build parent confidence in managing behavior and teaching new skills.

2. Key ABA Techniques Parents Can Learn

Positive Reinforcement

Rewarding desirable behavior immediately (praise, small treats, preferred activity).

Teaches children what is expected and motivates repetition.

Behavior Prompts & Fading

Using visual, verbal, or physical prompts to guide behavior.

Parents learn how to fade prompts so children gain independence.

Discrete Trial Training (DTT) Basics

Breaking skills into small steps.

Teaching step-by-step with clear instructions, prompts, and reinforcement.

Natural Environment Teaching (NET)

Teaching skills during everyday activities (play, meal prep, chores).

Helps skills generalize beyond therapy sessions.

Functional Communication Training (FCT)

Teaching alternative communication (words, sign, PECS) instead of problem behaviors.

Behavior Management Strategies

Addressing challenging behaviors using evidence-based methods like functional behavior assessment (FBA) results.

3. Teaching Generalization

Generalization is applying skills learned in one context to other situations or environments.

Parents are key to achieving this because they are part of the child’s daily life.

Strategies for Parent Generalization Training:

Multiple Settings – Practice skills in different rooms, outdoors, or at relatives’ homes.

Different People – Teach siblings, grandparents, or babysitters how to reinforce skills.

Vary Materials – Use different toys or objects to perform the same skill.

Routine Integration – Embed ABA techniques into daily routines (meals, bedtime, errands).

Prompt Fading – Teach parents how to gradually reduce prompts so the child becomes independent.

Monitoring & Feedback – Track progress and give parents constructive coaching.

4. Tools to Support Parents

Visual schedules & checklists

Data collection sheets for behavior tracking

Video modeling to show correct implementation

Weekly coaching sessions (live or virtual)

Home practice assignments to encourage skill use outside therapy

5. Sample Parent Training Session Structure

Duration: 45–60 minutes

Review last week’s goals & data (5–10 min)

Model technique with child (10–15 min)

Parent practice with feedback (15–20 min)

Generalization planning – decide how to apply skill at home, school, or community (10–15 min)

Provide resources – handouts, videos, checklists

 Key Takeaway:

By actively training parents and coaching them on ABA strategies and generalization techniques, you multiply therapy outcomes, strengthen the parent-child bond, and empower families to continue progress every day.
